We Stand As the World’s Largest Equity Derivatives Clearing Organization

Designated as a Systemically Important Financial Market Utility (SIFMU), our role is critical in ensuring confidence in the marketplaces we serve. We clear millions of transactions daily across options, futures, and stock loan products, safeguarding the integrity of each contract by mitigating risk between buyers and sellers, irrespective of market conditions.

Our Journey

Since our founding in 1973, OCC has been at the forefront of shaping secure markets. Over the years, we've achieved significant milestones:

1973

CBOE Clearing Corporation, the predecessor to OCC, is founded.

1974-1978

SEC approves transforming CBOE Clearing Corporation into The Options Clearing Corporation (OCC), an industry clearinghouse for all U.S. equity options. Trading in put options begins. OCC introduces Exercise by Exception to streamline expiration processing.

1979-1986

Trading in cash-settled index options begins. The first version of "Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options," also known as the Options Disclosure Document (ODD), is developed, OCC pioneers the use of cross-margining.

1987-1993

OCC launches INTRACS system for clearing and settlement which provides enhanced assignment and position processing. OCC collaborates with the industry exchanges to form Options Industry Council (OIC). OCC introduces Stock Loan/Hedge Program.

1994-2003

OCC introduces current clearing system ENCORE which provides real-time position processing. OCC opens new facility in Texas. ETF options begin trading. ENCORE begins intraday trade processing.

2004-2009

Annual cleared contract volume surpasses 1 billion. OCC implements STANS to calculate Clearing Member margin requirements. OCC introduces Market Loan Program.

2010-2015

U.S. Treasury’s Financial Stability Oversight Council names OCC a SIFMU. OCC establishes pre-funded $1 billion committed repurchase facility with CALPERS and eSecLending.

2016-2021

OCC and EquiLend launch platform to expand access to OCC’s Market Loan Program. OCC implements Financial Safeguards Framework. Annual cleared contract volume surpasses 5 billion. OCC establishes persistent minimum level of skin-in-the-game. OCC launches Renaissance Initiative modernization effort.

2022-Present

SEC issues notice of no objection to OCC’s proposal to adopt cloud technology for new clearing, settlement, and risk management platform. Annual cleared contract volume surpasses 10 billion. OCC amends clearing membership criteria allowing banks to apply for membership. OCC celebrates 50th anniversary.
