OCC Stories: Zephaniah Manning on His Empowered Growth

Zephaniah Manning joined OCC's Human Resources team in 2022. In his OCC Story, he shares how he felt empowered to grow and develop thanks to his manager and our Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).

Zephaniah Manning – Associate Principal, Talent Acquisition - is part of the HR team in OCC’s Chicago office.

   

I feel OCC is undergoing a transformation that will be one of the biggest corporate changes known to our industry. It has been exciting to be a part of these efforts, and I now appreciate all the work that goes into helping OCC transform.

My manager has always instilled his confidence in me, and we started out with a plan to focus on my personal growth within OCC. However, after having a heart-to-heart with my manager and the CHRO, Carla Dawson, I realized how much they care about me beyond being a headcount to fulfill a duty. When speaking with Carla about my personal life, I felt the warmth she exudes as a leader and how much she cares, which allowed me to open up more and take action.

The CHRO suggested that I take part in the Human Resources planning committee, and I quickly began to engage more, create relationships, and build trust that may not have otherwise been fostered. Now I have the power to do whatever I set out to do and put that force into action. I created and fostered relationships with managers, leaders, and employees as well as becoming a mentor. This has helped me feel confident day-to-day in such a fast-paced environment.

It also made me a stronger believer in the people here at OCC and just how phenomenal every one of my colleagues is. I feel like I am part of an elite group of minds working together to create change. I also feel empowered and proud of my department and the work I do every day. This all came from a connection that inspired confidence not only in me, but in my ability to help transform OCC into something much bigger and greater.
